Édouard de Berty

On the large north column of the transept crossing hangs the funerary monument of Édouard de Berty, squire, lord of Lint, who died on 26^th August 1676. He was secretary to the Privy Council of the King of Spain and had married Catherine Clocman, daughter of Henri Clocman and Jacqueline Maes. His cenotaph, originally located in front of the choir, mentions a foundation for a mass in honor of Saint Joseph. It features a medallion, held by two putti, depicting Édouard de Berty’s profile in grisaille and bas-relief. Eight quarters of nobility adorned the cenotaph (his own and those of his wife: de Berty, Steyvoort, Boisschot, Van der Troncke, Clocman, Stercke, Maes, Boisschot); but these disappeared during the French Revolution. Édouard de Berty was also related to the Garnier family of which several members are buried in the church. His sister Dorothée married Chrétien de Brouchoven. Their son Édouard, who became mayor of Antwerp, adopted the name Berty and married his cousin Lambertine-Ernestine Garnier.

LORD OF LINT, SON OF THEODORE AND GRANDSON OF JEAN BAPTISTE DE BERTŸ, LIVING SECRETARY

TO THE KING IN HIS PRIVATE COUNCIL, AND OF THE

ARCHDUKES’ CHAMBER, WHO DIED

ON 26^th AUGUST 1676.

AND LADY CATHERINE CLOCMAN, HIS WIFE,

DIED ON 23^rd AUGUST 1657.

He ordered by his will of 2^nd August 1676 that his body be buried in the vault

covered with a white marble stone bearing

his and his wife’s coats of arms, which he had built in the aforementioned

choir and founded therein a daily Requiem Mass

followed by the De Profundis and a Pater Noster [Our Father] for the intention

of the Founder, setting aside for this purpose 250 Florins per year

and a sum of 100 Florins to celebrate annually a

sung Mass in honor of Saint Joseph

during the octave, having charged the Executors of

his will to mention it in this Epitaph
